The 2025 family study places Cacteae within Cactoideae and recognizes the subtribes Echinocactinae, Ferocactinae and Cactinae. Older papers use different boundaries and genus counts; those numbers describe their classifications, not an eternal inventory.
What this changes for growers
Keep older names with source records so historical papers remain searchable. Do not infer identical care, disease resistance or graft compatibility merely because two plants share a tribe. The research guide identifies the host used in each example.
