Description

In cultivation, the name is used for a violet-flowered form of L. williamsii. The stem is glaucous green, reported as somewhat darker green than typical L. williamsii, up to about 4 cm tall and 5 cm in diameter, with a woolly crown; old plants cluster and mound (caespitose). Flowers are comparatively large for the genus, roughly 2.5–3.5 cm across, with rose-violet to dark pink-red tepals, pistil and filaments — the trait growers use to recognize the name. Young areoles and seedlings are reported to carry small, persistent spines, an atypical trait for Lophophora otherwise seen mainly in hybrids.

Taxonomy and names

Described at species rank by Habermann in 1975 — the same year, in the same journal, that he described L. fricii. No type locality or wild population has ever been confirmed. The Cactus Conservation Institute states plainly that it is "generally considered a cultivar... as a wild population has not been located," with material held in botanical collections such as the Charles University Botanical Garden, Prague. Kew's Plants of the World Online treats the name as a heterotypic synonym of Lophophora williamsii. Most horticultural Lophophora names, including echinata, jourdaniana and decipiens, are not accepted by current taxonomic treatments as separate species — see L. williamsii — Taxonomy and names.

Cultivation

Grow as for L. williamsii: a fast-draining mineral mix, bright light, and a dry, frost-free winter. See the soil-mix guide and the seasonal-care calendar. Keep the "jourdaniana" label on the record as a horticultural name, distinct from a documented wild-collection history.
