Read a cross as parentage

Record the seed parent first and pollen parent second when the breeder’s convention is known. An open-pollinated seed lot has an identified seed parent but unresolved pollen parentage. Preserve the breeder’s exact notation rather than guessing.

Selection versus progeny

The Huntington warns that seedlings sold under a parent cultivar’s name can be misleading. Give each seedling an individual record and keep its cross or lot reference.
